Delhi Metro stations to get high-end baggage scanners for commuter safety
security newsIn an effort to enhance safety measures for Metro passengers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has opted to introduce highly advanced baggage scanners at its stations gradually. DMRC officials highlight that the newly integrated scanners boast advanced features, ensuring heightened safety for passengers. These scanners also prove to be more convenient for elderly and female commuters when handling heavy baggage during the scanning process.
Currently, 34 state-of-the-art baggage scanners, equipped with commuter-friendly features, have been deployed at key interchange stations such as Kashmere Gate, AIIMS, Vishwavidyalaya, Huda City Centre, Rajouri Garden, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Noida Sector-18, and Palam, among others. These new scanners replace the older X-BIS systems. This installation is part of Phase-I, and plans are underway to install an additional 250 such advanced baggage scanners across all Delhi Metro stations by the end of the year.
To augment and fortify the X-Ray baggage scanning system at security checkpoints in Metro stations, DMRC is systematically introducing these highly advanced scanners. Notably, these scanners come with unique features enabling faster baggage clearance, handling approximately 550 bags per hour, a significant increase from the previous capacity of 350 bags per hour. The conveyor belt speed has been elevated from 18 cm per second to 30 cm per second, specifically aimed at alleviating passenger congestion during peak hours.
Beyond expediting baggage clearance, these advanced scanners contribute to bolstering security surveillance at entry points. Large monitors with high-resolution images assist CISF officials in promptly identifying potential threats such as explosives or arms. Moreover, the scanners can penetrate X-rays through materials as thick as 35 mm steel plates.
The new baggage scanners also incorporate features such as an inclined input/output conveyor belt system, continuous audio-video monitoring with a 360-degree camera above the scanner to prevent theft or altercations. Additional provisions for the CISF staff operating the scanners include charging ports for wireless sets, hand-held metal detectors, mobile phones, a water bottle hanger, and a multi-utility movable rack for essential items.
Presently, around 400 X-BIS machines are operational at various Metro stations within the extensive 400-km network of the Delhi Metro.
